Bureau commences investigation into aircraft crash in Ikeja
Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), formerly the Accident Investigations Bureau-Nigeria (AIB-N), says it has commenced investigation into the accident involving a Jabiru J430 light aircraft that crashed at Oba Akran area of Ikeja, in Lagos, Tuesday.
The light plane with registration number 5N-CCQ crashed and burst into flames while on a test flight after 1500 (1400hrs GMT).
Confirming this, Tuesday, the bureau via its Twitter handle (@nsib_nigeria) said: ”The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has been notified and commenced investigation into an accident involving a Jabiru J430, a light single airplane with Nationality.”
The bureau also disclosed that the aircraft was operated by Air First Hospitality & Tours and had two passengers on board before it crashed around Oba Akran, a busy area of Lagos. There were no fatalities.
Speaking on the incident, spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Lagos, Ibrahim Farinloye confirmed that two persons on board were rescued alive.
Meanwhile, remarking, while on a visit to the site of the crash, Tuesday evening, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised the first responders and residents who participated in the rescue mission.
Reacting later via his personal Twitter handle (@jidesanwoolu), the governor said: “Today, at the location of the crash, I expressed my appreciation of their commendable efforts to the first responders and residents who actively participated in the rescue operation.
“The incident involved a single engine fixed-wing Jabiru aircraft with registration number 5NCCQ that crashed at Oba Akran Avenue in Ikeja.
“Thankfully, both passengers on board were successfully rescued and are currently receiving medical attention.
“The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), whose responsibility it is to investigate incidents of this nature have already commenced investigations,” he said.
Two crew members were rescued from the burning single engine aircraft which plunged to the ground along the Oba Akran expressway in Ikeja, Tuesday afternoon.
Responders, including the Lagos Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the state fire service attended to the rescued occupants of the light aircraft.
