Cargo laden boat capsizes in Bayelsa, passengers swim to safety

Capsized boat in Bayelsa State

A boat mishap involving a cargo and passenger boat MV Tari occurred along the Yenagoa-Nembe-Brasss waterways  in Bayelsa State.

The ill-fated boat capsized near Okoroma in Nembe Local Government Area of the state and the passengers on board swimmer to safety whilst the cargo remained submerged.

Mr Tari Dikuma, Assistant Secretary of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Okpoama unit, told our correspondent that the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon.

Dikuma who was part of rescue operation at the incident site of the mishap said no life was lost but goods worth millions of naira was lost, adding that some items have been salvaged.

“So far we have not recorded any casualty but we have salvaged a lot of items with speed boats, badge and open boats,” he

Mr Asinim Butswat , Police Spokesman in Bayelsa said that the incident was yet to be reported to the nearby Police Division and hence could not provide details.
