Club World Cup: FIFA shops for new host, as Japan cancels tourney over Covid-19 spike
World football governing body, FIFA, is shopping for a new host country for this year’s Club World Cup tournament.
This follows as Japan, the earlier host announced it will no longer accommodate the football tournament following the spike in the cases of Covid-19 recorded in the country in the aftermath of the recently-concluded 2020 Tokyo Olympics staged in the country.
The tournament, normally held in December, features clubs from across the world who have won their region’s equivalent of the European or UEFA Champions League battle it out for the ultimate bragging rights.
FIFA statement confirming the development, Friday, said the Japan Football Association (JFA), due to the COVID-19 pandemic and hosting situation in the country, are no longer in a position to host the Club World Cup 2021.
“FIFA would like to thank the JFA for their work and commitment and looks forward to going back to Japan in the future. Further details about an alternative host for the FIFA Club World Cup 2021 will be announced by FIFA in due course.”
As it is now, FIFA is already looking to find a new host for the tournament, as the likes of Chelsea from Europe, wait to discover where they will head off to for the three-week tournament in December, this year.
