Commonwealth Games: Team Nigeria medal winning athletes receive dollar rewards from Sports ministry
Fourth batch of Team Nigeria medalists and their coaches at the just-concluded 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, have received their cash rewards from the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
Athletes who won gold medals received $5,000, silver medallist received $3,000, while bronze medallists got $2,000.
Athletes who represented Nigeria in the 4 x100 relay received $15,000 for the team.
Amongst those who were rewarded are Women’s 100m Hurdles Champion, Tobi Amusan, 200m Silver medallist and long jump winner, Ese Brume among others.
The Coaches and officials also got rewarded by the ministry for their roles in Team Nigeria’s success.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare ensured that three weeks camping allowance was also paid to all athletes.
It would be recalled that earlier, Saturday, the second set of Team Nigeria athletes, mostly wrestlers and powerlifters, who won medals at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham received their cash rewards from the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
This was the second set of medal-winning athletes and their coaches to be rewarded at the Commonwealth Games.
At a brief ceremony at their camps on Saturday night in Birmingham, Chef De Mission of Team Nigeria, Dr Simon Ebhojiaye and some top officials of the Sports Ministry thanked the athletes and their coaches while presenting them with the cash rewards.
The sum of $25,000 was given to the first set of athletes and their coaches who were majorly the weightlifters.
Among those in the second set of athletes that received their cash rewards on Saturday were Gold medal winners, Odunayo Adekuoroye, Blessing Oborududu and Mercy Genesis.
