Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, has resigned after a poor run of games in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

But the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, says he is unaware embattled Super Eagles coach has tendered his resignation.

The former Ajax Amsterdam’s forward confirmed his resignation to Channels Television.

“Yes, it is true. I have resigned,” he wrote in response to enquiries.

Finidi led the Eagles to a 1-1 draw against South Africa at home in Uyo and a 2-1 loss to Benin Republic in Abidjan, putting Nigeria’s qualification to the World Cup in serious doubt.

The two results extended Nigeria’s winless run in the qualifiers having previously played two draws under former coach Jose Peseiro.

Following the poor performance of the Nigerian team in the two games under Finidi, there were several calls from the fans for his sack.

Gusau, says he is unaware embattled Super Eagles coach, Finidi George, has tendered his resignation.

This comes amid reports online that the coach resigned after the NFF announced Thursday that it would hire an “expatriate technical adviser” for the Eagles, following their dismal performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifying series.

The Eagles have managed just three points from a possible 12, and sit fifth in the six-team Group C, which has put their qualification hopes in jeopardy.

The Eagles dismal outings drew the ire of the country’s football-crazy populace, who are still smarting from the disappointment of the team’s non-qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
