Cross River’s Green Carnival will mitigate climate change – Commissioner
[ANIEKAN ANIEKAN, Calabar]
Cross River State Commissioner for Tourism Eric Anderson says this year’s edition of the Green Carnival will help mitigate climate change.
He disclosed this in Calabar during a briefing ahead of this year’s edition of the Wet Season Green Carnival which will take place in the 27th of July.
The green carnival for the year has as theme: Go Green and will be held simultaneously in all the 18 LGAs of the state.
Anderson said: “We need to go green to replenish our degraded forest stock, enhance aesthetics and by extension mitigate climate change.
“The Green Carnival is only a programme aimed at creating awareness in the citizenry to imbibe the culture of tree planting.
“With the rich profile in forest potential and climate change mitigation, it is only wise for the state to sustain and replenish this nature’s huge resource”, the commissioner said.
Also speaking, the permanent secretary, Ministry of International Donor Support, Dominic Akwaji said the future of the state’s economy is green.
He added that studies have been conducted and the UN REDD is also calculating the carbon credit the state has.
