Dr. Ihekweazu, great Imo son, says Sen. Frank Ibezim as he lauds NCDC boss’ appointment as WHO Asst Sec-Gen
The appointment of Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, Director-General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, (NCDC), as Assistant Secretary General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), has continued to receive praises.
This time, Distinguished Senator Frank Ibezim, representing Imo North in the National Assembly, has poured encomium on Ihekweazu, describing him as s great son of Imo State that is excelling in great things.
A statement by the WHO Director General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announcing Ihekweazu’s appointment with effect from November 1, 2021, said he would be in charge of Health Emergency Intelligence.
The statement further said Ihekweazu “will lead the work on strengthening pandemic and epidemic intelligence globally, including heading the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence in Berlin, ” adding that he is confident that “Ihekweazu’s appointment will help further accelerate WHO’s work in health emergencies.”
Felicitating with Ihekweazu on his new international appointment, Ibezim noted: “Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu’s credential as an achieving thoroughbred professional is not in doubt.
“This is typified in how well the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, which he heads, has steered the battle against the deadly Covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria and insulated the country from the dreadful statistics we hear about other lands.
“Indeed, Ihekweazu deserves his new appointment. I congratulate him and look forward to hearing that he had, as usual, excelled in the office and taken up higher responsibilities,” he said.
The Senator also felicitated with the Federal Government and Nigeria for the development, adding that the country is blessed with talents that are capable of helping to pull her out of her present challenges.
