From Chinedu Nwafor, Abakaliki
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ebonyi State Chapter, on Thursday held a procession and prayer in solidarity to the National President of the Union, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who was invited by the Nigeria Police over terrorism sponsorship allegation.
The labor leaders who were led by the NLC State Chairman, Comrade Professor Ogugua Egwu, matched from the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium Abakaliki to the headquarters of the State Police Command, where they besieged the entrance gate for over an hour praying and chanting solidarity songs.
Speaking, Comrade Egwu said they embarked on the solidarity match and prayer as a mark of solidarity to the President of the Union, Comrade Ajaero, who he said was being haunded on trump up allegation by the Nigeria Police.
He said: “We are here to match and pray in solidarity to our dear President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who has been invited for interrogation on trump up allegation by the Nigeria Police, which we are not sure that a man of his pedigree, a man of honestly and integrity like him can be involved in.
“As members of the NLC, we see this as a distraction in our course to emancipate the suffering workers of Nigeria. We see it as a distraction to our direct initiative to see that Nigerian workers fair better. We believe that this is an act of persecution, we believe that this is an act of intimidation and we believe it an attempt to make sure that workers of Nigeria do not have a voice again.”
Responding, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, DCP Anyai Dennis, who received the Labour Leaders on behalf of the CP, commended them for their peaceful conduct during the procession.
He assured them that their message had been received, adding that the Nigeria Police Force would ensure that justice was done in the matter involving their National President, Comrade Ajaero.
