Enugu councils election: Five feared killed as gunmen attack polling units, set vehicles, electoral materials ablaze

Gunmen on Wednesday attacked a polling unit at Obeagu in Akwananaw community and another polling unit at Akpugo in Enugu state while the local government election was still ongoing.
Five persons were feared killed and many injured in the attacks while three vehicles and electoral material were reportedly set on fire.
The gunmen were said to have stormed the polling unit, shot sporadically, making voters and the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) officials to scamper for safety.
Five journalists who were on their way to Agbani community to monitor the exercise in the area were lucky to have escaped the deadly attack, even though, two of them were said to have sustained injuries,
One of the Journalists who preferred not to be named said, “we were on our way to Agbani in a bus to monitor election,but on approaching a polling unit at Obeagu, we saw a Siena and SUV cars with some masked men inside and immediately, we immediately diverted to a nearby village and within a short time, we started hearing gunshots. All of us ran for our dear lives.
“About 30 minutes later, we came out of the bush to see three vehicles that were set ablaze at the polling unit including other electoral materials.”
Efforts to get the Police spokesperson of Enugu state command DSP Daniel Ndukwe were not successful as of the time of filing this report.
