Equities Market bearish as NGX-ASI declines by 0.03%
Nigeria’s Equities market closed negative on Tuesday as the NGX-ASI decreased to 97,702.56 from 97,733.86 recorded at the close of the previous trading day, indicating a YTD return of +30.66%.
Market capitalization decreased by N18.98 billion to N59.226 trillion from N59.245 trillion recorded at the previous trading day’s close. However, the market turnover increased to N27.364 billion from N10.150 billion.
At the end of today’s trading session on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX), a total of 399,507,962 shares in 9,403 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 9,203,925,126.16, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Monday, December 2), today’s data shows 11% decline in volume and 9% decline in turnover. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 59.2 trillion.
In the aggregate, 122 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 29 gainers and 23 losers. Beta Glass Company led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 53.90 per share, followed by Golden Guinea Breweries (+10%), Lafarge Wapco (+9.95%) and Honeywell Flour Mill (+9.89%). On the losing side, Sovereign Trust Insurance came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 10% at NGN 0.72 per share, followed by John Holt (-9.98%), Ellah Lakes (-9.92%) and Thomas Wyatt Nigeria (-9.42%). AXA Mansard Insurance recorded the highest volume of 32.5 million traded shares, followed by United Bank for Africa (31.1m), Access Holdings (27.9m) and Ellah Lakes (23m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 31.30 (-0.03%) points to close at 97,702.56, representing a 1-week gain of 0.06%, a 4-week gain of 0.6%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 30.66%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (+0.33%; +0.39% 1WK; +32.11% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+2.68%; +4.48% 1WK; +59.08% YTD), NGX Industrial Index (+1%; +1.92% 1WK; +32.48% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+0.82%; +2.48% 1WK; +15.07% YTD), NGX Premium Index (+0.79%; +1% 1WK; +28.49% YTD), and NGX Pension Index (+0.48%; +0.82% 1WK; +32.61% YTD).
