Equities market closed bullish as NGX-ASI gains 0.79% on sustained investor sentiment
Nigeria’s equities market closed positive Monday as the NGX-ASI increased to 104,418.95 from 103,598.30 recorded at the close of the previous trading day, indicating a YTD return of 1.45%.
Market capitalization increased by ₦795 billion to ₦64.440 trillion from ₦63.645 trillion recorded at the previous trading day’s close. The market turnover also increased to ₦13.299 billion from ₦8.980 billion.
At the end of the first weekday of trading , a total of 518,275,743 shares in 17,196 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 13,299,389,690.91, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Friday, January 24), today’s data shows 10% decline in volume, 48% improvement in turnover, and 49% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 64.2 trillion.
In the aggregate, 127 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 38 gainers and 30 losers. Beta Glass Company led the gainers with 9.98% share price appreciation closing at NGN 65.00 per share, followed by RT Briscoe (+9.92%), Access Holdings (+9.88%) and Chellarams (+9.83%). On the losing side, MRS Oil Nigeria came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 10% at NGN 180.90 per share, followed by Transcorp Hotels (-9.97%), Eunisell Interlinked (-9.95%) and John Holt (-9.64%). Access Holdings recorded the highest volume of 51 million traded shares, followed by FCMB Group (40.3m), Sterling Bank (38.9m) and Zenith Bank (33.2m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) moved up 820.65 (0.79%) points to close at 104,418.95, representing a 1-week gain of 2%, a 4-week gain of 2.24%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 1.45%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (+0.82%; +2.28% 1WK; +1.73% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+4.71%; +8.87% 1WK; +12.08% YTD), NGX Pension Index (+2.1%; +4.32% 1WK; +6.24% YTD), NGX Consumer Goods Index (+1.74%; +0.97% 1WK; +2.19% YTD), NGX Premium Index (+1.65%; +4.16% 1WK; +1.47% YTD), and NGX Main Board Index (+0.35%; +0.91% 1WK; +1.42% YTD).
