Equities market continues on bearish trend as Investors lose N290m
Nigeria’s equities market closed negative on Thursday as the NGX-ASI decreased to 102788.20 from 102,836.13 recorded at the close of the previous trading day, indicating a YTD return of -0.13%.
Market capitalization decreased by ₦0.29 billion to ₦63.148 trillion from ₦63.147 trillion recorded at the previous trading day’s close. However, the market turnover increased to ₦22.500 billion from ₦15.157 billion.
At the end of today’s trading session , a total of 390,357,501 shares in 12,159 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 21,437,239,849.71, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Wednesday, January 22), today’s data shows 45% improvement in turnover and 13% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 63.1 trillion.
In the aggregate, 123 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 28 gainers and 28 losers. SCOA Nigeria led the gainers with 9.76% share price appreciation closing at NGN 3.60 per share, followed by Daar Communications (+9.09%), May & Baker Nigeria (+8.43%) and Prestige Assurance Company (+6.82%).
On the losing side, Morison Industries came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 9.98% at NGN 3.61 per share, followed by C&I Leasing (-9.91%), Ikeja Hotel (-8.89%) and Neimeth International Pharma (-8.51%). Guaranty Trust Holding recorded the highest volume of 42.1 million traded shares, followed by United Bank for Africa (37.4m), Zenith Bank (25.2m) and Access Holdings (24.3m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 47.93 (-0.05%) points to close at 102,788.20, representing a 1-week gain of 0.59%, a 4-week gain of 1.41%, but an overall year-to-date loss of 0.13%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (+0.07%; +0.82% 1WK; +0.09% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+1.04%; +1.84% 1WK; +4.97% YTD), NGX Pension Index (+0.28%; +1.12% 1WK; +2.95% YTD), NGX Premium Index (+0.08%; +1.46% 1WK; -1.14% YTD), NGX Industrial Index (+0%; +0.02% 1WK; -8.13% YTD), and NGX Main Board Index (-0.11%; +0.15% 1WK; +0.37% YTD).
