Equities Market continues on bearish trend as NGXASI declines by 0.86%
Trading activities in the Nigerian Equities Market closed negative today, Thursday (08/02/2024) by 0.86% as the NGX-ASI decreased to 101,227.42 from 102,106.31 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +33.21%.
Similarly, the market capitalization decreased today by N480.78 Billion to N55.39 trillion from N55,87 trillion recorded at the close of the previous trading day, While, the market turnover increased to N7.172 billion from N6.244 billion.
At the end of today’s trading session on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX), a total of 478,381,431 shares in 10,957 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 7,172,356,428.54, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Wednesday, February 7), today’s data shows 40% improvement in volume, 12% improvement in turnover, and 13% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 55.4 trillion.
In the aggregate, 123 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with seven gainers and 53 losers. Meyer led the gainers with 9.97% share price appreciation closing at NGN 6.29 per share, followed by Juli (+9.52%), Tantalizers (+4.76%) and Red Star Express (+4.05%).
On the losing side, National Salt Company came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 10% at NGN 58.50 per share, followed by Sterling Bank (-10%), Unity Bank (-10%) and Consolidated Hallmark Holdings (-10%). Universal Insurance Company recorded the highest volume of 42.8 million traded shares, followed by Transcorp Nigeria (41.5m), Zenith Bank (31.7m) and United Bank for Africa (31.4m)
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) dropped 878.64 (-0.86%) points to close at 101,227.67, representing a 1-week loss of 1.53%, a 4-week gain of 22.56%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 35.38%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (-0.82%; -1.54% 1WK; +36.51% YTD), NGX Industrial Index (-0.3%; -4.03% 1WK; +100.19% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (-0.49%; -0.48% 1WK; +19.41% YTD), NGX Premium Index (-0.53%; -0.77% 1WK; +49.82% YTD), NGX Main Board Index (-1.13%; -2.15% 1WK; +25.58% YTD), and NGX Pension Index (-1.58%; -2.37% 1WK; +14.78% YTD).
