Equities Market investors gain N507bn as NGX-ASI appreciates by 0.80%
Nigerian Equities market closed positive on Wednesday as the NGX-ASI increased to 104,230.73 from 103,398.82 recorded at the close of the previous trading day, indicating a YTD return of +1.27%.
Market capitalization increased by ₦507 billion to ₦63.558 trillion from ₦63.051 trillion recorded at the previous trading day’s close. Also, the market turnover increased to ₦24.692 billion from ₦14.638 billion.
At the end of today’s trading session , a total of 639,480,210 shares in 13,550 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 20,440,171,597.55, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Tuesday, January 7), today’s data shows 43% decline in volume, 40% improvement in turnover, but 18% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 63.6 trillion.
In the aggregate, 126 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 27 gainers and 28 losers. MTN Nigeria led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 220.00 per share, followed by Transcorp Nigeria (+10%), Honeywell Flour Mill (+9.95%) and Aiico Insurance (+9.94%).
On the losing side, Sunu Assurances Nigeria came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 9.99% at NGN 9.01 per share, followed by Universal Insurance Company (-8.97%), Secure Electronic Technology (-8.11%) and Consolidated Hallmark Holdings (-5.82%). Tantalizers recorded the highest volume of 82.4 million traded shares, followed by Universal Insurance Company (56.6m), Aiico Insurance (54.3m) and Chams (33.1m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) moved up 831.91 (0.80%) points to close at 104,230.73, representing a 1-week gain of 1.27%, a 4-week gain of 6.13%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 1.27%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (+0.96%; +1.16% 1WK; +1.16% YTD), NGX Premium Index (+2.18%; +2.59% 1WK; +2.59% YTD), NGX Pension Index (+1.16%; +1.94% 1WK; +1.94% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+0.55%; +2% 1WK; +2% YTD), NGX Main Board Index (+0.1%; +0.59% 1WK; +0.59% YTD), and NGX Consumer Goods Index (+0.09%; +0.04% 1WK; +0.04% YTD).
