Equities market investors lose N152bn as NGX-ASI declines by 0.24%
Nigerian Equities market closed negative on Tuesday as the NGX-ASI decreased to 103,398.82 from 103,648.24 recorded at the close of the previous trading day, indicating a YTD return of +0.46%.
Market capitalization decreased by ₦152 billion to ₦63.051 billion from ₦63.203 trillion recorded at the previous trading day’s close. However, the market turnover increased to ₦1,112.217 billion from ₦855.965 billion.
At the end of today’s trading session , a total of 1,112,216,698 shares in 16,617 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 14,638,301,278.74, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Monday, January 6), today’s data shows 30% improvement in volume and 10% improvement in turnover. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 63.1 trillion.
In the aggregate, 127 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 19 gainers and 51 losers. PZ Cussons Nigeria led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 27.50 per share, followed by Abbey Mortgage Bank (+10%), Learn Africa (+9.9%) and NCR Nigeria (+9.77%). On the losing side, RT Briscoe came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 10% at NGN 2.70 per share, followed by FTN Cocoa Processors (-10%), Veritas Kapital Assurance (-10%) and Sunu Assurances Nigeria (-9.98%). FBN Holdings recorded the highest volume of 161 million traded shares, followed by Aiico Insurance (121m), Tantalizers (105m) and Universal Insurance Company (93.8m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 249.42 (-0.24%) points to close at 103,398.82, representing a 1-week gain of 0.24%, a 4-week gain of 5.39%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 0.46%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (-0.13%; -0.04% 1WK; +0.19% YTD), NGX Industrial Index (-0%; +0.38% 1WK; +0.21% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (-0.1%; -0.27% 1WK; -0.69% YTD), NGX Pension Index (-0.2%; +0.45% 1WK; +0.77% YTD), NGX Main Board Index (-0.2%; +0.59% 1WK; +0.49% YTD), and NGX Premium Index (-0.33%; -0.46% 1WK; +0.4% YTD).
