Equities market investors lose N49bn as NGX-ASI declines by 0.08%
Nigeria’s Equities market closed negative on Friday as the NGX-ASI decreased to 105,451.06 from 105,530.74 recorded at the close of the previous trading day, indicating a YTD return of +2.45%.
The market performance for the week increased by 1.80% to 103,586.33 from 105,451.06 recorded at the beginning of the week.
Market capitalization decreased by ₦49 billion to ₦64.303 trillion from ₦64.351 trillion recorded at the previous trading day’s close. However, the market turnover increased to ₦19.394 billion from ₦13.069 billion.
At the end of the last weekday of trading, a total of 511,261,907 shares in 12,877 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 9,667,028,300.27, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Thursday, January 9), today’s data shows 4% improvement in volume, 26% decline in turnover, and 1% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 64.3 trillion.
In the aggregate, 126 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 32 gainers and 25 losers. C&I Leasing led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 4.51 per share, followed by Honeywell Flour Mill (+9.99%), Trans-Nationwide Express (+9.89%) and RT Briscoe (+9.83%).
On the losing side, Sunu Assurances Nigeria came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 9.99% at NGN 7.30 per share, followed by Eunisell Interlinked (-9.96%), Skyway Aviation Handling Co. (-9.87%) and Daar Communications (-9.28%). Tantalizers recorded the highest volume of 53 million traded shares, followed by Universal Insurance Company (34.8m), Access Holdings (33.9m) and Nigerian Breweries (27.3m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 79.68 (-0.08%) points to close at 105,451.06, representing a 1-week gain of 1.8%, a 4-week gain of 7.38%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 2.45%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (-0.07%; +2.19% 1WK; +2.53% YTD), NGX Main Board Index (+0.01%; +0.57% 1WK; +1.28% YTD), NGX Industrial Index (+0%; -0.26% 1WK; +0.05% YTD), NGX Pension Index (-0.06%; +2.79% 1WK; +3.62% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (-0.08%; -0.34% 1WK; -0.86% YTD), and NGX Consumer Goods Index (-0.16%; -0.34% 1WK; +0.34% YTD).
