Equities Market loses N48.29bn as NGX-ASI declines by 0.17%
Trading activities in the Nigeria Equities Market closed negative Wednesday as the NGX-ASI decreased by 0.17% to close at 52,207.77 compared to 52,296.48 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +1.87%.
Similarly, the market capitalization decreased by N48.30 billion to N28.4273 trillion from N28.4756 trillion recorded at the previous trading day’s close, while the market turnover decreased to N5.03billion from N5.15 billion recorded at the close of the previous trading day.
At the end of today’s trading session, a total of 670,082,230 shares in 6,254 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 5,028,466,161.49, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Tuesday, May 2), today’s data shows 60% improvement in volume and 6% improvement in turnover. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 28.4 trillion.
In the aggregate, 110 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 22 gainers and 18 losers. Ardova led the gainers with 9.25% share price appreciation closing at NGN 18.30 per share, followed by Academy Press (+8.9%), Cutix (+8.89%) and RT Briscoe (+8.33%).
On the losing side, Transcorp Nigeria came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 9.49% at NGN 2.29 per share, followed by International Energy Insurance (-8.87%), Union Bank Nigeria (-7.79%) and FCMB Group (-7.28%).
Transcorp Nigeria recorded the highest volume of 277 million traded shares, followed by Access Holdings (174m), Fidelity Bank (31.4m) and Chams (18m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 88.71 (-0.17%) points to close at 52,207.77, representing a 1-week gain of 1.17%, a 4-week loss of 2.6%, but an overall year-to-date gain of 1.87%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 50 Index (+0.57%; +0.85% 1WK; +3.74% YTD), NGX Top 30 Index (-0.32%; +1.01% 1WK; +2.04% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (+0.78%; +1.77% 1WK; +10.6% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+0.51%; +2.55% 1WK; +6.37% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+0.17%; +3.43% 1WK; +8.1% YTD), and NGX Pension Index (+0.14%; +1.61% 1WK; +6.81% YTD).
