
Equities market opens week positive as NGXASI appreciates by 0.06%

Nigeria’s equities market closed positive on Monday as the NGX-ASI increased to 103,648.24 from 103,586.33 recorded at the close of the previous trading day, indicating a YTD return of +0.70%.
Market capitalization increased by ₦38 billion to ₦63.203 trillion from ₦63.165 trillion recorded at the previous trading day’s close. Also, the market turnover increased to ₦13.249 billion from ₦8.243 billion.
At the end of the first weekday of trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX), a total of 855,965,099 shares in 16,505 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 13,249,496,009.41, were traded.
Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Friday, January 3), today’s data shows 21% improvement in volume, 61% improvement in turnover, and 21% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 63.2 trillion.
In the aggregate, 128 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 48 gainers and 19 losers. Wema Bank led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 11.00 per share, followed by Daar Communications (+10%), Honeywell Flour Mill (+9.99%) and Wapic Insurance (+9.96%).
On the losing side, Cutix came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 5.45% at NGN 2.60 per share, followed by Caverton Offshore Support Group (-5.36%), Jaiz Bank (-5.23%) and Champion Breweries (-4.53%). Chams recorded the highest volume of 80.8 million traded shares, followed by Veritas Kapital Assurance (60.5m), Access Holdings (54.3m) and Guaranty Trust Holding (54m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) inched up 61.91 (0.06%) points to close at 103,648.24, representing a 1-week gain of 1.48%, a 4-week gain of 5.57%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 0.7%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (-0%; +1.25% 1WK; +0.33% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+4.12%; +32.14% 1WK; +22.91% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+0.74%; +1.32% 1WK; +2.09% YTD), NGX Premium Index (+0.23%; +1.21% 1WK; +0.73% YTD), NGX Pension Index (+0.15%; +1.28% 1WK; +0.97% YTD), and NGX Main Board Index (-0.03%; +1.59% 1WK; +0.69% YTD).
