Equities market sustained bullish momentum on Monday as NGX-ASI inches up by 0.02%
Nigeria’s equities market closed positive on Monday as the NGX-ASI increased to 102370.62 from 102,353.68 recorded at the close of the previous trading day, indicating a YTD return of -0.54%.
Market capitalization increased by ₦10.41 billion to ₦62.861 trillion from ₦62.851 trillion recorded at the previous trading day’s close. Also, the market turnover increased to ₦16.350 billion from ₦11.808 billion.
At the end of the first weekday of trading , a total of 353,372,667 shares in 13,891 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 7,939,879,564.39, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Friday, January 17), today’s data shows 8% improvement in volume, 33% decline in turnover, but 17% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 62.9 trillion.
In the aggregate, 126 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 32 gainers and 26 losers. Caverton Offshore Support Group led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 2.42 per share, followed by Wapic Insurance (+9.91%), SCOA Nigeria (+9.68%) and UPDC (+9.52%). On the losing side, Eunisell Interlinked came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 9.99% at NGN 14.06 per share, followed by John Holt (-9.63%), Secure Electronic Technology (-8.99%) and Honeywell Flour Mill (-7.58%). Universal Insurance Company recorded the highest volume of 31.3 million traded shares, followed by Aiico Insurance (22.1m), Oando (19.8m) and Zenith Bank (19.7m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) inched up 16.68 (0.02%) points to close at 102,370.36, representing a 1-week loss of 2.84%, a 4-week gain of 1.88%, but an overall year-to-date loss of 0.54%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (+0.13%; -2.89% 1WK; -0.54% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+2.12%; -1.57% 1WK; +5.22% YTD), NGX Industrial Index (+0.17%; -8.04% 1WK; -7.99% YTD), NGX Pension Index (+0.15%; -1.45% 1WK; +1.85% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+0.12%; +0.01% 1WK; +2.95% YTD), and NGX Premium Index (+0.08%; -6.8% 1WK; -2.58% YTD).
