Equity investors lose N176.05bn as NGX-ASI declines by 0.32%
Nigeria’s equities market closed negative on Wednesday, as the NGX-ASI decreased to 96,203.65 from 96,510.13 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +28.66%.
Market capitalization decreased by N176 billion to N55.261 trillion from N55.437 trillion recorded at the close of the previous trading day. The market turnover decreased to N4.531 billion from N5.635 billion.
At the end of today’s trading session , a total of 446,609,595 shares in 10,148 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 4,531,400,867.31, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Tuesday, August 27), today’s data shows 20% decline in turnover but 19% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 55.3 trillion.
In the aggregate, 121 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 35 gainers and 14 losers. Industrial & Medical Gases led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 26.40 per share, followed by Chams (+9.95%), Oando (+9.94%) and Livestock Feeds (+9.91%). On the losing side, Neimeth International Pharma came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 9.09% at NGN 2.00 per share, followed by Tantalizers (-8.64%), MTN Nigeria (-7.91%) and Thomas Wyatt Nigeria (-7.06%). Universal Insurance Company recorded the highest volume of 52.6 million traded shares, followed by Japaul Gold and Ventures (51.8m), Prestige Assurance Company (35.8m) and Tantalizers (35.1m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) shed 306.48 (-0.32%) points to close at 96,203.65, representing a 1-week gain of 0.39%, a 4-week loss of 1.61%, but an overall year-to-date gain of 28.66%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (-0.24%; +0.93% 1WK; +28.34% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+1.87%; +6.88% 1WK; +30.01% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+0.62%; +1.72% 1WK; -4.73% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (+0.53%; +8.68% 1WK; +73.4% YTD), NGX Main Board Index (+0.41%; +1.22% 1WK; +37.28% YTD), and NGX Consumer Goods Index (+0.16%; +1.78% 1WK; +39.07% YTD).
