EU Election Observation Mission to present final report on 2023 elections, Tuesday
European Union Election Observation Mission (EU-EOM) will release its third and final report, including recommendations on the recently-concluded 2023 General Elections in Nigeria.
The press conference which is scheduled to hold to hold, Tuesday afternoon, in Abuja, follows the group’s observation of the conduct of the highly-disputed elections which produced now President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner.
The EU’s Election Observation Mission team observed the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections as well as the March 18 Governorship and State Houses of Assemblies elections.
The European Union deployed an election observation mission following an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria (INEC).
The group’s preliminary and second reports have since been issued which did not listed among other faults, the poor conduct of INEC in the political exercise, which it said, though improved in relation to previous exercise, but suffered many shortcomings including voters’ intimidation, and suppression, violence and irregularities.
The mission’s mandate was to observe all aspects of the electoral process and assess the extent to which the elections comply with regional and international standards for elections and national legislation.
The EU EOM Chief Observer and Head of the Delegation to the 2023 Nigeria elections was led Barry Andrews.
Meanwhile, ahead of the public presentation, Tuesday, Mr Andrews, Monday, met with the Chairman of the INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, alongside National Commissioners of the commission in Abuja. According to the EU, it has observed all general elections in Nigeria since 1999.
