Ex-governorship candidate, Ozigbo quits PDP, joins Labour Party
Former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, Valentine Ozigbo, has defected to the Labour Party (LP).
Ozigbo, a political ally of the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate in the 2023 General Elections, Dr Peter Obi, expectedly joined the latter in a move that has long been anticipated since the former PDP chieftain in Anambra State lost out to Chris Uba in the party’s primary poll in the senatorial ticket for Anambra South zone held last May.
Political analysts have claimed that Obi’s sudden exit from the PDP crippled Ozigbo’s chances at challenging major forces in the PDP angling for the senatorial ticket, despite having a huge followership.
It would be recalled that Ozigbo had earlier contested the Anambra State governorship poll last year on the platform of the PDP but finished second best to eventual winner and governor, Prof. Charles Soludo.
This year, the politician entered the senatorial race on the platform of the same party but lost out in the controversial primary to Chris Uba.
In an appearance on ‘The Arise Interview’ T. V programme on Thursday, August 18, 2022, Mr. Ozigbo revealed that his decision to resign from the PDP was based on the need to ensure that Nigeria’s history records a competent and visionary leader is elected to lead Nigeria into the future.
According to the Ozigbo, Nigerian citizens have split into two categories.
“Those working to sustain the status quo and those uncomfortable with the status quo and want to bring positive change.
“I belong to the group that is uncomfortable with the status quo, and we must do what we have to set the nation back on the path of progress,” Ozigbo said.
