Ex-senate president, Ekweremadu joins Enugu governorship race

Former Deputy President of the Senate, and current Senator representing Enugu West Senatorial zone, Chief Ike Ekweremadu has declared his intention to contest the 2023 Enugu governorship race.
Ekweremadu who disclosed this during a press conference at Best Western Hotel, Enugu, on Friday, promised to offer good governance to Enugu people, if elected Governor.
On the issue of zoning which is said to favor Enugu East, Ekweremadu said Enugu State did not need zoning of the governorship seat but capability to deliver good governance to the people of the State.
There has been clamor by some stakeholders of the State that the governorship seat be zoned to the Enugu East for the interest of justice and fairness.
According to him, there was never a time the leaders deliberated on zoning in Enugu State, even Governor Chimaroke Nnamani was not a product of zoning.
“If there is zoning, I will not be in Senate for 5 tenures. So, for me to represent my people in the senate for 5 years means that there is no zoning in Enugu state.
“Those people talking about zoning have a candidate in mind as they believe this is a means to achieve their plans,” he said
The governorship hopeful named Mr Ogboo Asogwa as his campaign coordinator.
He pledged to ensure full autonomy of local government areas under his administration and to embark on massive road construction in the State.
Ekweremadu said, “If elected Governor, I will utilize all the experience, friendship, partnership and global contacts acquired over the years to transform Enugu state to a model state.
“As a Senator, I worked hard to put forward necessary bills and motions on constitutional amendments, security education, economy etc and I’m ready to do more by restoring the people’s faith in the government through open door government.
“We will fight corruption in a creative and effective mindset. We will enthroned Justice, equity and liberty to all citizens and government sevices will be available 24/7 through a well designed government and our revenue collection will be fair, reliable and devoid of leaks and waste,” he said.
