FAAN confirms attack by bandits on Kaduna airport runway
Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed Saturday’s reported attack on the runway of the Kaduna International Airport by bandits.
FAAN which, Sunday, described the attack as ‘regrettable,’ said a group of bandits attacked the Runway 05 axis of Kaduna airport earlier in the day.
FAAN, in a statement by its Acting General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Mrs Faithful A. Hope-Ivbaze, sais one casualty was reported in the incident, even as two motorcycles used by the bandits wee recovered by security operative at the airport.
“A combined team of anti-banditry military personnel and Crime investigation unit of FAAN Aviation Security Department swiftly intervened for rescue operation, with one casualty reported in the incident.
Normalcy has since been restored at the airport. The team also recovered two motorbikes abandoned by the bandits.
“Additionally, heavy reinforcement team from the Nigerian Defence Academy is on ground to ensure safety and security of airport workers/users.
The FAAN AVSEC Department has equally released operational vehicles to the team for patrol purposes.
“The Authority uses this opportunity to sympathise with the family and friends of the victim of this unfortunate incident,” read he statement.
It would be recalled that on Saturday afternoon, a personnel of the Nigerian Airspace Management Authority (NAMA) was shot dead by bandits who had stormed the Kaduna airport to prevent an aircraft operated by Azman Air from departing.
The Azman early afternoon flight was delayed by over an hour as security operatives from the Aviation Security AVSEC), operated by FAAN, troops from the nearby Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and police confronted the bandits.
The Azman aircraft with registration number 5N-HAI had arrived from Lagos at 12.36 and was due to return to same destination by 1.04 when its departure was halted due to the invasion of the Kaduna airport’s runway.
