FIFA U20 World Cup: Flying Eagles crash out after 1-0 loss to South Korea AET
South Korea’s Seek Hyun-Cho’s 95th minute strike was enough to send Nigeria’s Flying Eagles out of the FIFA U20 World Cup holding in Argentina, in what is probably the second shocker of the tournament after Israel had defeated Brazil 3-2, last Saturday, to record the first.
The Flying Eagles lost 1-0 after extra time (AET) of 30 minutes.
The Flying Eagles were tipped to progress into the semi finals on the back of a surprise victory over tournament favourites and host nation, Argentina, last Wednesday.
However, the Nigerian youth team failed to do the needful as the match stretched into extra time after normal regulation 90 minutes elapsed with both sides in a 0-0 stalemate.
The match played Sunday night, Nigeria time at the Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades, Santiago del Estero, has now seen all African teams exit.
The tournament is now expected to feature two relatively unknown sides; Israel and South Korea in the semi finals.
It was the third meeting between Nigeria and South Korea at this level of FIFA tournaments.
The South Koreans defeated Nigeria 2-1 in their first meeting in Netherlands 2005, while the Flying Eagles won 1-0 at the 2013 edition in Turkey.
This is also the second quarter final match to stretch into extra time after the Brazil/Israel encounter, last Saturday.
Israel, South Korea, Italy have so far made it into the semi finals of the FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina, billed to commence from Thursday.
