FIFA U20 World Cup/WAFU B Women’s Cup: F’Eagles beat Dominican Rep 2-1, as Falconets thrash Niger Rep 7-0

Nigeria’s representatives at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina, the Flying Eagles, and the country’s junior women’s national team, the Falconets at the West African Football Union (WAFU) B U20 Women’s Cup got off to a positive start with wins.

While the Flying Eagles defeated the Dominican Republic by 2-1, the Falconets trounced their Niger Republic counterparts by 7-0.

Both marches were played Sunday night in Argentina and Ghana, where the competition are currently ongoing.

The Flying Eagles playing at the Estadio Malvinas Argetinas, in the city of Mendoza, Sunday,  at the ongoing FIFA U20 World Cup hosted by Argentina, edged past the Dominican Republic after coming from a goal down in the early minutes of the encounter.

Samson Lawal scoied the winning goal against Dominican Republic, Sunday night

The team coached by Ladan Bosso conceded early but leveled up through an own goal scored by a Dominican Republic player, De Pena after Edison Ecsone had put the West Indian nation ahead in the first half.

However, Samson Lawal secured the winner in the 67th minute after pouncing on poor back pass by the Dominican Republic defenders, to give the Flying Eagles three points in the Group D encounter.

An Emmanuel Umeh effort which ended in the back of the Dominican Republic net was ruled out for offside.

The Flying Eagles play Italy, on Wednesday, May 24 at the same stadium in Mendoza.

The team’s last group match is against Brazil

Earlier, Saturday, coach Ladan Bosso has expressed confidence that his team can come tops against the Dominican Republic in the Sunday’s Group D game, even as he asked for Nigerians to get behind the team.

For the Falconets, in the match also played on Sunday night, at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, half time scores stood at 3-0 against Niger U20 national team, with Esther Ajakaye (twice) in the fourth and 12th minutes, and Chinyere Kalu in the 30th minute.

At full time, it 7-0 with additional goals from Adaobi Okah 49th minute, Victoria Alani 64th, and Chioma Olise 90 + 1 minute.

It was also a hattrick of goals for Esther Ajakaye.

The team now has three points from one match in the WAFU B Women’s U20 tournament.

Coached by Chris Danjuma, the Falconets’ next match is on May 24 at the same stadium, while the last match in the group will be played on May 28 at the Paa Joe Stadium, also in Kumasi.
