Fleeing robbers abandon N35m loot from Edo bank robberies
Sum of about N35m has allegedly been recovered from the band of armed robbers which attacked more than four commercial banks in Uromi, in Esan North East council area of Edo State, Thursday.
The robbers had raided Zenith Bank, First Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA), as well as, the Unity Bank, all in Uromi.
About two policemen were reportedly killed in the mayhem which saw the robbers cart away millions of naira from the banks before fleeing.
Eyewitness accounts also claim the robbers also attacked a police division in the area during the incident.
However, due to the intervention by youth in Ubiaja, a community in the Esan council, the robbers allegedly abandoned some of their loot, as the youth were said to have blocked the major road by the rail line.
The robbers left behind their cash-laden vehicles off the rail line and fled on motorcycles.
Consequently, the vehicles and cash recovered were taken to Ubiaja police station where the total sum counted so far was pegged at N35 million.
The development was confirmed by Bello Kotongs, spokesperson for the Edo State police command, who added that the recovered money was currently in the custody of the police.
