Four feared dead, warder injured in failed prison break at Osun correctional facility
Four inmates have reportedly been shot dead as they made an attempt to break out of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) facility at Kosere, Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The prison break, said to have occurred around 9am on Tuesday, was thwarted by duty personnel of the The incident was said to started during a fracas that broke out during the routine daily morning sanitation and devotion hour.
Subsequently, some inmates tried to use the opportunity to escape.
A prison warder was said to have sustained injuries when some inmates attacked him on their way out the facility.
In the process of attempting to escape the prison facility, warders shot dead four of the inmates who led the breakout attempt, effectively ending the commotion.
However, while the Command Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Osun Command of Correctional Service, DSC Sola Adeotan, denied the incident, his counterpart at the State Police Command, Yemisi Opalola confirmed the prison break.
Already, Osun State Comptroller of Corrections, Lanre Amoran, has visited the facility for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
Meanwhile, DSC Adeotan eventually confirmed the incident, as he assured that normalcy has returned to the facility, as he also narrated the incident, in which he claimed only two inmates lost their lives as against the earlier reported four..
“Following the successful containment of an attempted jailbreak at Ile-Ife Custodial Centre, Osun State on 4th January 2022, I wish to state that normalcy has been restored in the facility.
Recall that at about 1148 hours, during a routine open-out of inmates for daily exercises, the inmates in a particular cell attacked the officers on duty and succeeded in breaking out more inmates from other cells.
“Having overpowered the officers due to their large number, surged to the main gate in a bid to break out from jail.
“While the officers trapped within the yard where being manhandled, the ensuing confrontation between the escaping inmates and the armed personnel on guard duty resulted in four (4) of the inmates being imobilised. They were taken to the hospital for medical attention. Two (2) of the injured inmates later lost their lives while the remaining 2 are still in the hospital responding to treatment.
”Controller of Corrections, CC Olanrewaju Amoran was on ground to assess the situation.
“He assures members of the public that the inmates are in safe custody and normalcy has returned to the yard while investigation is ongoing
“The Controller, on behalf of Controller Genera of Corrections, Haliru Nababa mni, appreciates other sister security agencies, for their swift response to support officers and men of the Service,” Adeotan said.
