Attack on police checkpoint, Thursday afternoon, at Maryland axis of Independent Layout, Enugu, by gunmen has claimed three lives of policemen.
It was gathered that the masked gunmen numbering about six and driving in Mercedes Benz and Toyota Jeep raided the checkpoint while the policemen were conducting stop-and-search operation.
The development has created huge tension within that axis of Enugu state, as people who had closed for businesses, shot down their shops and deserted the place.
An eyewitness who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said, “I was in my shop when the policemen flagged the two cars down and asked them to pack and come out from their cars.
“But immediately they came out from the cars, and they opened fire. Three policemen were shot dead on the spot while other policemen at the checkpoint abandoned their Toyota Hilux truck and sped away.”
The State police spokesman of Enugu State, Daniel Ndukwe, said information surrounding the incident was still sketchy.
“Meanwhile, manhunt of the hoodlums has been initiated. Further development will be communicated, please,” he added.
