Gunmen kill 5 oil workers in Imo
An attack by gunmen on workers of the Lee Engineering Company in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, Monday morning, has left about five persons dead, according to reports just reaching Oracle Today from Imo State.
According to the reports, the workers were going to Assa Community where they are building a gas plant when the gunmen struck.
“The gory incident happened this morning. The oil workers were going to work when the gunmen attacked and shot dead, five of the workers. Others were wounded,” an indigene of Ohaji who did not want his name in print volunteered.
As at the time of filing this report, the company was yet to make any official statement on the ugly incident, but some community leaders have confirmed the incident which is said to be the third major strike by hoodlums in the area.
President-General of Assa Autonomous Community, Bartholomew Obodo, confirmed the attack and appealed to the federal and state governments to urgently intervene to save people of the area.
Also, National President of Congress of Ohaji Youths, Emmanuel Ugorji, confirmed the incident, adding that some community leaders and security agents, including himself, have visited the scene.
Ugorji recalled that gunmen had attacked Oil Serve Company, then came the kidnapping of the Cluster Development Board Chairman, Godswill Uzomba, who, he said was still missing three months after his abduction, an incident that was also followed by the burning of ZEROC equipment at Watersmith Industrial Park.
The Youth leader urged the government and security operatives to scale up security in the area to check insecurity in the oil rich kingdom as he said that people in the community were now living in fear following increased activities by gunmen who have been terrorizing the community in recent times.
The state police command is yet to confirm the incident.
