Three policemen have been killed by unknown gunmen who attacked Onueke police division on Friday night.
The attackers also left another policeman with serious bullet injuries as he said to be currently battling for survival in the hospital.
They also set the station ablaze and allegedly freed inmates in the cell and set about four vehicles ablaze.
The attack was said to have taken place around 7pm to 8pm on Friday night.
Sources said the hoodlums came in motorcycles and a tricycle.
It was further gathered that on arrival, they engaged the policemen on duty in gun duel, overpowered them, and unleashed the terror.
The State police spokesman, DSP Loveth Odah confirmed the incident.
Odah said the command had commenced investigations into the attack, adding that the perpetrators would not go unpunished.
Odah further called on the general public to provide the police with information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.
“Yes, three policemen were killed in the attack. We don’t know the identity of the attackers yet; and we are calling on the general public to provide information to the police in order to hunt down the perpetrators of this heinous crime”, she said.
An eyewitness who did not want to be named likened the attack to the ones that took place during the recent EndSARS protests in the state.
The State police commissioner, CP Philip Maku has visited the Onueke Police Station Saturday morning to ascertain the level of havoc done by the hoodlums.
Maku was reported to have vowed to fish out the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, the police are currently doing mass arrest in the area, and the residents are currently living in fears.
