Global Coordinator of the Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria (GCSDN), headquartered in Texas, United States, Dr. Fred Odorige has advised the Federal Government  to pick a date for the  honour flag-waving Nigerians killed during EndSARS protest.

In October 2020, tens of thousands of young Nigerians took to the streets to protest against police brutality after a video went viral of a man allegedly being killed by the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), sparking what became known as the #EndSars demonstrations.

The demonstrations rocked the country for two weeks – and led to the government agreeing to disband SARS and set up judicial panels of inquiry to investigate the widespread allegations of abuse by officers. Many were during the protest.

Dr. Odorige ,who holds a doctorate degree in military science  said in a statement recently,“it is always a day of sober reflection to watch the annual 15th January Armed Forces Remembrance Day of Nigeria!

”The government must not stop there. We must pick a date to honour the flag-waving Nigerians that were killed during the EndSARS protests and those helplessly killed by terrorists on the streets; in their homes and on their farms.

“We must remember those who were killed when they went out to cast their votes on elections day. Our compatriots returned home as corpses while others were buried in mass graves.”

According to  him, “they were all fallen heroes who hoped for a better Nigeria. Though we’ve experienced many days of tragedies, choosing 20 October as a  date to commemorate that black Tuesday of 20 October 2020, at Lekki Toll Gate, is preferable.

“Celebrating armed forces remembrance day while arresting and shooting at Nigerians who observe EndSARS remembrance day, is evil, hypocritic and antithetical to the Nigerian dream.

“Now, we all live in fear on this side of our graves because the blood of our compatriots  continually cry for justice.

“It is time for restoration and national reconciliation in Nigeria.

“We have bled enough.

What is good for the goose is good for the gander.”
