How I survived Ifeanyi Ubah’s convoy attack– Aide narrates ordeal
Aide to senator representing Ifeanyi Ubah, the Anambra South senatorial zone, Kameh Ogbonna, has recounted his ordeal in the shocking incident, which saw gunmen riddle the convoy of his principal with bullets in Sunday night attack in the Enugwu Ukwu area of the state.
Senator Ifeanyi Ubah is on the platform of the Young Peoples Party (YPP) at the National Assembly.
It would be recalled that the convoy of the Senator Ubah came under violent attack late Sunday while returning from Enugwu Ukwu, at past 8pm, when gunmen blocked the senator’s vehicles and opened fire, killing seven policemen attached to his security detail, as well as about two other aides, with unconfirmed reports claiming the figure could rise to 10.
The two other aides to the senator killed in the shooting are; Obum Ikechukwu and Goodness Mathias.
Senator Ubah was inside one of the cars at the time of the attack as he escaped death along with some of his aides.
Ubah who confirmed the attack Monday, also said the security detail killed are attached to Nigeria Police and Department of State Services (DSS).
According to the account of Ogbonna, who rode with the senator in his car at the time of the attack, what saved him and Ubah from being killed by the gunmen was the bullet-proof sport utility vehicle (SUV) car type they were both inside.
Ogbonna who confirmed that said the attack happened at the expansive Enugwu Ukwu junction heading out to the busy Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, said the gunmen emerged from all sides of the junction and sprayed bullets at the senator’s convoy of vehicles, with the security details caught unawares.
Continuing, the aide said both he and Senator Ubah would have been dead if not for the bullet-proof SUV
“If not for the bulletproof jeep the senator was riding in, he would have been dead by now.
“We were passing Enugwu Ukwu junction when they hit us from all sides and as I speak with you Obum (Ikechukwu), the special aide to the senator is dead.
“About seven security operatives were hit by the assassin’s bullet,” Ogbonna said.
Confirming the attack, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Anambra State Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said he is yet to get the figure of the victims involved in the shooting, while also adding that the state’s commissioner of police has already visited the scene of the attack.
“The Commissioner of Police, Mr Echeng Echeng visited the scene and there were blood stains at the place indicative of the fact that the attack was bloody, but to give the number I cannot say anything on that,” Ikenga said.
