IGP deploys four police commissioners to Delta for Saturday’s election
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alkali Baba Usman, has directed the immediate deployment of four Commissioners of Police to Delta State ahead of this Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly election, in the state.
Delta State Police Command Spokesperson, Bright Edafe who disclosed the directive in a statement in Asaba, Friday, said the deployment was to ensure effective policing and adequate security during the general elections in Delta.
Police commissioner John Babangida will be in charge of the election in Delta, while police commissioner Mamman Sanda will handle Delta-North.
It said police commissioner Zachariah Fera would be in charge of Delta-South while police commissioner Adebola Hamzat would take charge of Delta-Central.
According to the statement, the police will work with sister security agencies to provide adequate security at polling units, collation centres and INEC offices in Delta.
It stated that Marine Police were deployed to secure the waterways to ensure the free movement of voting materials, officials and the electorate.
The officer restated the ban on vehicular movement between 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day.
”Only officials on emergency and essential duties will be allowed passage during this period. The ban on security escorts for politicians during the election still stands, (and) politicians are advised not to move with their security details on election day,” added the statement.
The police statement also mentioned that vigilance groups and anti-cult volunteers would not be allowed to play any security roles during the elections, urging the electorate to be law-abiding and to conduct themselves in a manner that would promote free and credible elections.
