Imo gets 2nd varsity as Uzodimma floors Okorocha
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has formally been handed over a letter of recognition of the Kingsley Mbadiwe University, Ogboko in Imo State by the Executive Secretary of the National University Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed.
Kingsley Mbadiwe University is now the 42nd state institution in Nigeria and the 143rd university in the country.
The brief handover ceremony took place Wednesday at the NUC office in Abuja where Prof. Rasheed used the opportunity to laud Governor Uzodimma’s doggedness and commitment in the pursuit of quality education for the people Imo State.
Presenting the letter of recognition to Governor Uzodimma, Prof Rasheed said: “With effect from Wednesday 8th December 2021, K.O. Mbadiwe University, Ogboko is formally recognised as the 42nd State University and the 143rd University in the Nigerian University System.”
The Executive Secretary NUC reiterated that Governor Uzodimma has shown much commitment towards the educational development and human capital development of Imo people, noting that Kingsley Mbadiwe University will add to the efforts of government to meet the human capital needs of the State.
In his response, Governor Uzodimma thanked the NUC for facilitating issuance of the letter and promised that government will do everything within her powers to ensure that the university meets the standard set by the Commission such that Kingsley Mbadiwe university will be among the sought after higher institutions in the country.
Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University was established on February 18, 2021 by the enactment of Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University (Establishment) Law No. 1 of 2021 of Imo State as a multi-Campus University with the main Campus at Ogboko in Ideato South Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State, Nigeria. This Law repealed the Eastern Palm University (Establishment) Law No. 13 of 2016.
The defunct Eastern Palm University was recognised by the NUC as the 42nd state university in Nigeria and 143rd in the Nigerian university system. Statutorily, the erstwhile Eastern Palm University by recent developments has changed to become Kingsley Ozumba University, Ideato South LGA, Imo State, Nigeria.
He said that the resolve to establish a state university was informed by the level of youth restiveness in the South-East.
Imo State is highly populated, we have a population of over five million and our youth population is very huge and it is also part of what has led to restiveness in the southeast.
The governor said “Today is a very special day for me, we have come here today to receive the recognition letter from NUC for our brand new KO Mbadiwe University.
“This university that is fully owned by owed by Imo State government has also provided us with the opportunity to immortalize one of our foremost philanthropists, KO Mbadiwe of blessed memory.
