INEC confirms March 11 date for Enugu East senatorial, rescheduled Edo federal constituencies’ polls
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed March 11 as date for the conduct of he postponed Enugu East senatorial district, as well as, the Esan West and Igueben Federal Constituencies’ elections.
It would be recalled that the Enugu East senatorial district elections as originally fixed for last Saturday, February 25 but was shifted following the assassination of the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Barrister Oyibo Chukwu, barely four days to the election.
A statement confirming the development signed by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, Thursday, further assured that a date for supplementary elections will be fixed for some senatorial districts and federal constituencies, where declarations and returns were not made.
According to Okoye, the date will be fixed but only after the forthcoming March 11 governorship and states assembly polls across the country.
“The Commission held its regular weekly meeting today, Thursday, March 2 and deliberated on several issues, including the Presidential and National Assembly elections, the Governorship and State Assembly elections and the pending elections in Enugu East Senatorial District and the Esan West and Igueben Federal Constituencies in Edo State.
“The Commission assures Nigerians that the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections scheduled for Saturday, March 11 2023 will hold as scheduled and all the process and procedures leading to the election are being finalised.
“Furthermore, the commission will conduct the rescheduled elections in Enugu and Edo State on Saturday, 11th March 2023 along with the Governorship and State Assembly elections.
“The Commission is aware that in some Senatorial Districts and Federal Constituencies, Declarations and Returns were not made. The Commission is compiling the list of the affected constituencies. A date for supplementary elections will be fixed after the Governorship and State Assembly elections,” the statement read.
