INEC scrapped card readers to deepen technology in electoral process – Oyo REC
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared its readiness to deepen the electoral process in Nigeria through the use of technology, as it affirmed that the decision had led to the cancellation of the use of card readers for subsequent elections in the country.
Resident Electoral Commissioner in Oyo State, Barrister Mutiu Agboke, who made the disclosure at the Zonal Stakeholders meeting organised by the Oyo State Office of INEC, held at Mapo Hall, in Ibadan, said the commission had upgraded its operations ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Agboke, while assuring Nigerians that the commission would not compromise on ensuring free, fair and credible elections in the country, charged politicians to stop sabotaging the processes for credible elections.
On the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise, the Resident Electoral Commissioner urged politicians to use their office to ensure that their followers not only register but also go through the entire process and get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Other speakers at the meeting, including Hon. Babajide Gabriel, a lawmaker in the Oyo State House of Assembly and Seyi Adeniyi, a stakeholder, commended the electoral body for the initiative while they promised to ensure that people who were yet to collect their cards do so on time.
The stakeholders meeting was attended by members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, representatives of various political parties in the state, security agencies and civil society groups, among others.
