Insurance: Women set to dominate appointments in Sept., as Tiamiyu, Adewumi-Zer, Adekola bag top jobs


Women professionals are set to dominate high profile appointments in the insurance sector of the country’s economy as three top players have now bagged major positions in their various organisations.

While the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) on Monday announced the appointment of Mrs. Abimbola Omowunmi Tiamiyu as its new Director-General, the Allianz Africa announced Adeolu Adewumi-Zer, as the new MD/CEO of Allianz Nigeria, just as African Alliance named Olabisi Adekola as Acting MD/CEO, all in September.

CIIN on Monday appointed Mrs. Abimbola Omowunmi Tiamiyu as the new Director-General following the retirement of Mr. Richard Borokini.

A statement from the institute said that Borokini joined the Institute in March 2016 and served for four eventful years.

The statement added that Tiamiyu started her Insurance Career with Great Nigeria Insurance Plc in March 1999 as a Superintendent, under the tutelage of Rev. Michael Abimbola Siyanbola, a great motivator on academic and professional excellence. In Great Nigeria Plc, she garnered underwriting experience in both Life/Pensions; and General Business Insurances; from where she moved to Cornerstone Insurance Plc in 2005. At Cornerstone, she demonstrated expertise working in various capacities in the Life Unit, Actuarial Unit and exited as the Group Head, Central Claims Group to join the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria in April 2018 as Director (Examination).

She bagged a Master’s Degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State in the Year 2003 and equally holds a Master of Science (Risk Management and Insurance) from the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State attained in 2019. Bimbola was inducted as an Associate of the Institute in the Year 2005 and became a Fellow of the Institute in the Year 2014. She has attended numerous trainings and seminars both at home and abroad.

She is a member of the Professional Insurance Ladies Association (PILA), where she was the Education Secretary (April 2016 till 2018) and Membership Secretary (2014 – April 2016). She has served in various sub-committees of the Life Offices at Nigeria Insurers Association, where she was the Assistant General Secretary (2013/2014). She is also a Faculty Member at the College of Insurance, Asese, Ogun State and a Certified International Labour Organisation (ILO) Micro-Insurance Trainer. Mrs Tiamiyu’s passion for sharing knowledge has seen her facilitate numerous trainings and seminars within and beyond the insurance industry.

She is a highly self-motivated insurance practitioner with astute acumen and professional work ethics. She is also a change catalyst, a life coach and mentor to many upcoming professionals.

She is happily married with children.


On its part, Allianz Nigeria appointed Adeolu Adewumi-Zer as the new Managing DirectorD/Chief Executive Officer, last Friday.

Adewumi-Zer, was previously the Regional Head of Mergers, Acquisitions and Transformation for Allianz Africa.

The leadership and structural changes at Allianz Nigeria are, however, subject to the approvals of the local regulatory authorities.

Adewumi-Zer will succeed Sunkanmi Adekeye, previously MD/CEO of Allianz Nigeria and Owolabi Salami, previously Executive Director of the company, who is retiring.

Prior to her appointment, Adeolu drove one of the three pillars of Allianz’s growth strategy in Africa by pursuing a pipeline of merger and acquisition (M&A) opportunities in its priority markets. She held key executive positions within the Allianz Group, based in three different continents. Adeolu has worked since 2000 in global financial services across numerous mature and emerging markets, beginning her career as an Actuarial and International Benefits Consultant within the Aon Group.

She was appointed as the first female board member of Allianz Nigeria in July 2019.

This deep operational insight into the company, coupled with her close familiarity with its strategic direction from her time as a board member, is what makes her the right fit for the role. She will continue to build and transform our entity into one ready to secure the future of all our customers and partners in her home country of Nigeria”, said Coenraad Vrolijk.

Adeolu is currently based in Nairobi, and will relocate to Lagos in due course.


Another insurance firm, the African Alliance appointed Olabisi Adekola as its news Acting MD/CEO, following the exit of Funmilayo Omo from the Board and Management of the Company effective from 31st August 2020.

The company disclosed this through a notice to the Nigerians Stock Exchange (NSE) last Friday, the appointment of Mrs. Olabisi Adekola to her new position effective 1st September, 2020 pending the appointment of a substantive Managing Director/CEO.

Adekola is a financial analyst, investment manager and proven business continuity leader with over twenty-five years’ experience in financial management, internal audit and accounting.

She began her career at Nigerian Hoechst in the mid-90s before joining African Alliance in 1997 as Assistant Superintendent in the Finance department.

She rose through the rank ranks across various Finance/Audit functions to head the Finance department as Assistant General Manager; Finance and Investment) in 2010.

She was promoted to the position of Executive Director; Finance in 2012 capping a brilliant lateral growth in the Company.

She holds an MBA in Financial Management from the Lagos State University and is a Fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA) and Association of Investment Advisors and Portfolio Managers (FIAPM); an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (ACTI), Nigerian Institute of Management and Business Continuity Professional, Disaster Recovery International. A brilliant mind, Adekola is an alumnus of the Lagos Business School.
