From Aniekan Aniekan, Calabar
CUSO International, a global organisation of volunteers have called for greater collaboration and volunteerism to help address global challenges across the world.
Uko Ekott, the Head of Programmes Africa of the organisation disclosed this in Calabar during an event to mark this year’s International Volunteers Day which has as theme: “Solidarity through volunteering”.
He said it is necessary to work together for the future of the planet and act before it is too late for sustainable human growth.
He described the theme of this year’s celebration as apt as it encourages collaboration.
“We must all work together to ensure the future of our planet as well as act before it is too late for sustainable human growth and a sense of equality that underpins all relationships in our world.
“The theme is apt and brings together all individuals to volunteer for social and economic development, as well as to transform people’s ideas in order to make a better society.
“This theme encourages all parties to collaborate rather than stand alone in order to work better”, he said.
He added that the primary goal is to continue to promote volunteerism, build a better future and find answers to global challenges.
The International Volunteers Day activity featured an inter school debate and a volunteerism interactive session with some selected schools in the state.
The debate, which had as topic “Volunteerism, a mandatory social responsibility” pitched the Hiddekel Academy against the FAAN School all in calabar with FAAN emerging victorious.
