She said the theme of this year’s celebration emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive and immediate measures to address the persistent inequalities between men and women globally, even as she called on women to empower themselves through education, describing education as a powerful tool that could help women gain knowledge, skills and confidence.
“Pursuing education can lead to better job opportunities and financial independence. Also, there’s need for women to advocate for their rights.Women should be vocal about their rights in various spaces, workplace, healthcare and education.
“Advocacy can take many forms, including participating in community discussions or engaging with policymakers. There’s also need for women to support women. This collaborative effort can create a ripple effect that enhances collective strength.
Women should challenge stereotypes. This includes addressing biases in workplace or advocating against harmful cultural practices that would limit women’s role,” she stated.
Also speaking, the State Chairman, Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria and Ex-Officio of NLC, Ebonyi State Chapter, Comrade Regina Oshibe, while thanking the Wife of the State Governor for her numerous interventions towards bettering the well-being of women and children in the State, called for equal rights and opportunities irrespective of gender in the society.
“This year’s theme highlights three points: the rights, equality and empowerment of all women and girls. This implies that there is a need to provide women with equal rights and opportunities to succeed like anyone else, breaking all the barriers that hinder women from fully participating in all sphere of life, whether in Education sector, political sector or in decision making process.”
She also called on women to know their worth and never allow societal conspiracies to hinder them, even as she acknowledged that gender equality is not about women alone.
“As women, we should know our worth and should not allow societal education to define us. And we should ensure the education of a girl child which is the surest way of empowering women.
“Gender equality is not just a woman issue. It’s everyone’s issue. Therefore, we must collectively create a space that would give everyone opportunity regardless of gender to survive”, she concluded.
