Kano Hisbah to arrest parents of Miss Nigeria 2021 beauty pageant winner
Kano State Hisbah says it will arrest parents of winner of the 2021 Miss Nigeria Beauty Pageant, Shatu Garko, as it claimed that the competition is ‘illegal.’
According to Commander of the Kano Hisbah, Haruna Ibn Sina, parents of the beauty queen may be arrested and interrogated for allowing their daughter to participate in the pageant.
Hisbah is the Islamic police set across some states in the northern region of the country, but particularly prominent in Kano State.
History was made recently, when Miss Garko won the 44th Miss Nigeria competition while wearing the hijab.
However, the Hisbah commander says the teenager’s parents may be arrested and interrogated for allowing their daughter to participate in Miss Nigeria beauty pageant for 2021, insisting the pageant is contrary to Islamic beliefs.
Reacting to Miss Garko’s victory in the beauty pageant in an interview with BBC Pidgin, Wednesday, Sina said participating in a pageant is ‘forbidden’ for Muslims from Kano, a northern Nigerian state with strict Sharia practices.
Sina said they had confirmed that Ms Garko’s parents are living in Kano and will soon be brought into custody and interrogated for the role their daughter played in the beauty contest.
Though Miss Garko participated in the pageant adorning her hijab, the Hisbah commander further condemned the exercise as a whole, saying it was against Quranic instruction.
