Detained leader of pro-secessionist group in the South East, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, will not appear in court on October 4, 2022 for continuation of his trial, as confirmed by his counsel, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor.

The IPOB leader’s counsel who stated this in a statement after Monday’s routine visit to Kanu at the headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS) Abuja, revealed that his client was still being kept in solitary confinement for over 14 months.

Kanu absence may not be unconnected with his health, which has been subject of speculation after it emerged that the activist was in serious discomfort, as his counsel sought medical attention for him.

It would be recalled that the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, had similarly expressed concern over the reported ill-health of Kanu.

A statement issued, penultimate Tuesday, in Enugu by Dr. Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia, National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, said it is self-evident that the Nnamdi Kanu travail is a product of circumstances, orchestrated to alienate the South East from the centres of power in Nigeria, especially since the onset of President Buhari administration

“The attention of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has been drawn to the deteriorating health of the Leader of the Independent Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Information reaching us indicates that ‘Nnamdi Kanu is currently suffering from gastro intestinal illness, which necessitates the constant use of antacids and other available medical treatments.’

“The DSS has refused to allow him have even the smallest amount of the prescribed painkiller, which could have given him short-term respite,” Report from Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the IPOB’s attorney, further adds that “the DSS has repeatedly treated the existing court order—which specifically directed that Nnamdi kanu should be granted access to his doctor for an independent review/investigation of his current health status—with the utmost contempt and disdain.

“The above report should be very worrisome to any fair-minded patriotic Nigerian. The fair-minded and patriotic because, it is self-evident that the Nnamdi Kanu phenomenon is a product of circumstances,” the statement read in part.

However, Ejiofor stated that the IPOB leader was elated by the prayers and solidarity shown to him by friends; as well as well-wishers on his birthday and prayed that God bless them.

“Onyendu was profoundly elated by the outpouring of prayers, good wishes, and solidarity on his special day on earth. He requested the expression of his heartfelt gratitude to you all; UmuChineke, followers, friends, families, and all lovers of freedom across the globe for massively celebrating him on his birthday. He does not take this for granted.

“Onyendu assures you all, UmuChineke, that he will emerge stronger and victorious in the end; and which freedom will greatly impact positively on the lives of UmuChineke.

“May I also use this medium to clarify that Onyendu is not appearing in court on the 4th of October, 2022.

”UmuChineke will be informed vide this platform or other approved channels of communication; whenever Onyendu will appear in Court. Kindly ignore the false rumor currently in circulation.

“We wish to reiterate that our defence team, eminently led by the indefatigable Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN; is not relenting in all legitimate actions necessary to bring every form of infractions on Onyendu’s rights being flagrantly violated by the DSS even in custody, to a halt. Thankfully, our efforts are yielding the desired results.”
