Labour Party rejects PEPC judgement
Directly walking into predictions by analysts, the Labour Party (LP) has rejected the judgements of the Presidential Elections Petition Court (PEPC) which refused all the reliefs sought by the party and its presidential candidate against the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), President Bola Tinubu, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the controversial February polls.
National Publicity Secretary of the LP, Obiora Ifoh, stated the party would not accept the decisions the election court, adding that the next obvious steps of the party would be decided soon.
The statement noted that details of the party’s position would be presented after consultation with its lawyers when the certified true copy of the judgement is made available to them.
The Oracle Today reports that all the claims in the petitions by the LP and some petitions from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) were thrown out during the delivery judgment by the PEPC on Wednesday.
The dismissal of most of the petitions was based on technical gaps, some lawyers who spoke on the verdicts told our correspondents.
Expectedly, the Labour Party rejected the judgements which denied it all the reprieves it sought, noting that the details of its position would be presented after consultation with its lawyers when the PEPC releases the certified true copy of the judgement.
In sum, the court declared that the Labour Party and Mr Peter Obi were not able to provide substantial evidence that they won the presidential election conducted last February by INEC.
The court stated that the petitioners failed to convincingly prove their cases against the election of President Bola Tinubu.
Mr Obiora stated that “the Labour Party watched with dismay and trepidation the dismissal of petitions by the five-man panel of the Presidential Election Petition Court led by Justice Haruna Tsammani today and we reject the outcome of the judgment in its entirety because justice was not served and it did not reflect the law and the desire of the people.”
According to him, “Nigerians were witnesses to the electoral robbery that took place on February 25, 2023, which was globally condemned but the Tribunal in its wisdom refused to accept the obvious.
“What is at stake is democracy and we will not relent until the people will prevail.
“We salute the doggedness of our team of lawyers who fearlessly exposed the wrath in our system. We can only weep for democracy in Nigeria but we refuse to give up on Nigeria.”
“We urge all lovers of democracy to remain focused and hopeful because a new Nigeria is possible.”
