Lagos govt blames property developer for collapsed three-storey building in Apapa
Lagos Government has blamed the partial collapse of a three-storey building under construction on Ladipo Oluwole Street, in Apapa, on property developers, who it accused of ignoring the ‘stop-work and seal-up’ orders of the State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and proceeding to continue with construction.
The state government also clarified that the project which collapsed last Sunday, was instead a three-storey under-construction building and not fiver storeys.
The collapse incident, which was flagged on the Physical Planning incident management platform on Sunday evening, triggered immediate preliminary inquiries that showed that officers of the LASBCA had issued several contravention notices, ‘stop-work and seal-up’ orders which the developer ignored and carried on construction without any recourse, whatsoever, to the authorities.
“There has been no report of any casualty, while the site has been cordoned off and taken over by LASBCA.
“This particular incident, like similar others, reinforces the government’s repeated calls for responsible behaviour on the part of all stakeholders in the built environment.
“Lagos State Government has also commenced investigations on the incident to unravel the minute details and guide appropriate actions,” a statement from the government read.
It would be recalled that less than a week after a seven-storey building collapsed in the Banana Island area of Ikoyi, in Lagos, another similar structure has reportedly fell in Apapa.
The seven-storey building in Banana Island was still under construction when it caved in, last Wednesday, killing one person and injuring over 50 people, mostly workers trapped at the site.
In reaction, the Lagos State Government suspended further construction works in the area, as it ordered the sealing of more high-rise building constructions in the area.
Meanwhile, in the latest incident, a three-storey said to be under construction collapsed, Sunday, in Apapa, Lagos, after a heavy downpour which occurred in the early hours of the day.
According to eyewitness account, the building gave way in the thunderstorm which followed the rain fall.
Responders from the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) reportedly sealed the affected three storey building.
The collapsed building is located at 45, Ladipo Oluwole Street, GRA Apapa area of the state.
However, a volunteer with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC), in Ajeromi Ifelodun LCDA, Asimiyu Tiamiyu, who was among the early callers at the scene said no casualty was recorded in the incident.
According to him, all the workers at the site of the collapsed building had embarked on Sallah break, reason why no one was involved in the incident.
