Lagos Govt declares 3-day mourning for victims of train, BRT bus accident
Lagos Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared 3 days of mourning for victims of the fatal accident involving a train and a BRT bus deployed by the State Government as staff vehicle, (BRT) which occurred at the PWD busstop, along the Agege Motor Road, between Shogunle and Ikeja Along axis.
The fully-packed BRT bus was conveying civil servants and their families to work from Isolo area of the state to the State Secretariat in Alausa via the Ikeja GRA when the incident occurred, Thursday morning, with the train operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
Addressing journalists shortly after visiting the injured at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Governor Sanwo-Olu disclosed that 85 occupants of the bus were involved in the accident out of which six passengers died; two recorded at the accident scene, with four lost their lives later.
The governor also declared that work stops at noon, Friday, March 10, ‘for all Civil Servants in the state,’ just as he directed that flags be flown at half mast, same day.
Sanwo-Olu further suspended all political campaign activities in the state for the next three days.
The Governor also commended all responders, Staff of Lagos State teaching hospital, LASUTH and Security Agencies for their prompt response, as well as his two political opponents, Mr. Jide Adediran of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party (LP) for also visiting the victims, noting that Lagos has the capacity to tackle emergency.
He said investigation into the incident is ongoing as he appealed and encouraged public spirited individuals to come forward voluntarily and donate blood to re-stock the blood bank.
Meanwhile, the driver of the bus is currently in the custody of the police command in Lagos.
