…Police to reorganize anti-cultism unit
Lagos Police Command says it has arrested the suspected killers of one Kolade Johnson, allegedly shot by a police team from the Anti-Cultism Unit, along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, last Sunday, March 31, at about 5.05pm.
The CP said this during a condolence visit to the family of the deceased, Tuesday. The Lagos police chief was accompanied on the visit by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Department of Finance and Administration, DCP Ayuba Elkanah, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Department of Operations, DCP Mohammed Ali, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation Department, DCP Yetunde
Longe and other Senior Police Officers from the Command.
The Commissioner of Police was received by the Head of the deceased’s family Alh Remi Lukman in their residence at No. 1 Beco Street, Onipetesi, Mangoro Bus stop. It would be recalled that a statement signed by the DSP Bala Elkana, the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State, said the Command received a distress call on that fateful day and time ‘that Lagos- Abeokuta Express Way has been blocked by some angry youths who were protesting the shooting of one Kolade Johnson ‘m’ of No.1 Beco street, Onipetesi, Mangoro Bus Stop by a team of policemen from Anti-Cultism Unit.
‘A team of policemen from the Rapid Response Squads and Metro patrol were promptly drafted to the scene.
‘The account of eyewitnesses helped in identifying the team which fled the scene immediately after the incident. Members of the team suspected to be involved in the shooting have since been arrested and are currently in Police custody undergoing interrogation. They will be subjected to internal disciplinary procedures, and may be prosecuted in conventional Court if implicated by ongoing investigation.’
During the visit Commissioner of Police Lagos State, CP Zubairu Muazu appealed for calm, as he also assured that ‘justice will prevail in this case.’ Muazu also condoled with the family, friends and well-wishers of late Kolade Johnson, as he promised to ‘initiate far-reaching reforms to help in repositioning the Anti-Cultism Squad for
effective service delivery, particularly in areas of respect for Human Rights and proficiency in the use of firearms.’
He condemned the action of the members of the Anti-Cultism team suspected to have carried out the shooting and reiterated his commitment in ensuring that justice is done in the matter, stating that the men suspected to have carried out the shooting have been apprehended and subjected to internal disciplinary procedures.
He revealed their names as Inspector Ogunyemi Olalekan and Sgt Godwin Orji attached to Anti-Cultism Squad
Responding, the Head of Kolade Johnson’s family expressed his gratitude to the CP for honoring the family with his presence and his resolve in ensuring that justice prevails in the case, just as he commended the CP for the bold steps taken in exposing those behind the shootings.
“I thought it is going to be a one man’s fight but seeing the Police high Command joining our family in this fight has shown that Justice will not only be done to Kolade but to the entire Nigerian youths. I am glad that we have a new police force which believes in Justice.”
He described his late son as a peace loving person and called on well-wishers to remain calm and allow the law to take its cause.
