Man killed, another injured as diesel-laden tanker falls on towing van in Lagos
Lagos State Fire Department has confirmed the death of a man in the early hours of Sunday, in an accident which occurred along the Mile 2 end of the Apapa – Oshodi Expressway when a diesel-laden tanker fell onto a stationary towing van.
According to the rescue team, the tanker was said to have dropped its cargo on the van when it was attempting to negotiating through barriers introduced by toll collectors on the road.
Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margret Adeseye, in a statement, said the incident, which happened in the early hours of the day, also left another person injured.
Adeseye said it occurred as a result of the barriers introduced by toll collectors in the community.
“The incident, which was reported at 4am, Sunday wee hours, has a 45,000 litres tanker heading towards Oshodi from Apapa where it loaded diesel to full capacity before it was reported to have fallen on a stationary towing van while in motion, negotiating its way out of barriers introduced by nefarious toll collectors.
“The resultant accident was mitigated by the Sari-Iganmu Fire Crew of the agency from resulting in a fire incident,” adding “two male adults were involved as one was rescued alive with injuries (and taken) to the hospital, and the other victim recovered was suspected dead,” the statement read.
She added that the remains of the tanker and the towing van have both been evacuated from the scene of the accident.
