[From BONIFACE OKORO, Umuahia]
Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, has re-assured that the university, as an agricultural-based Institution, would continue to proffer science-based solutions to farmers’ problems in order to enhance agricultural production and achieve food security in the country.
Prof. Madu Ofo Iwe gave the assurance through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Academic), Prof. Udo Herbert, at the Farmers’ Empowerment Programme organized by the MOUAU’s Extension Centre (MEC).
The VC, in his opening remarks, stated that one of the ways to enhance agricultural production is by organizing forums that would foster productive interaction between agricultural experts and farmers.
Speaking further on behalf of the VC, Prof. Udo Herbert noted that the gathering was aimed at updating the farmers with practical-oriented knowledge and skills in agriculture which he described as necessary tools for optimal food production.
The Director of MEC, Prof. Ike Nwachukwu, in his welcome address, added that the programme was aimed at encouraging the farmers to bring their farm produce to the University and share the experiences they garnered in the course of production. According to Prof. Nwachukwu, this would help solve production challenges, thereby increasing agricultural yield.
As part of the University’s efforts towards ensuring farmers’ welfare, the Keynote Speaker at the event, Dr. T. N. Obarezi, of the Department of Health Services, lectured the farmers on stress management techniques. The farmers were also guided on a tour of the University’s farm facilities.
Guests at the event were entertained by the Farmers’ Cultural Troupe.
