My kidnappers collected N25 million ransom – Ex-ABSU DVC, Emezue
A former Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), Prof. Godwin Emezue, has disclosed that his abductors were paid a whopping N25 million before they released from their captivity.
Prof. Emezue who was abducted on January 26, 2024 in front of his residence in Umuopara, Umuahia in Umuahia South local government area of Abia State, spent what he described as “11 agonizing days” with his hosts before regaining his freedom, describing his experience as “harrowing” and “dark period.”
Recollecting his bizarre experience one year ago, the Professor expressed gratitude to God for sparing his life; as well as his family, relations, colleagues and friends who raised money to secure his freedom.
In a post on ABSU Whatsapp platform on Monday, January 27, 2025, Prof. Emezue, a prominent figure in Scripture Union (SU), wrote: “Yesterday, 26th January, 2025 marked a significant anniversary in my life – the day I was kidnapped and, by God’s mercy, released after 11 agonizing days.
“As I reflect on that harrowing experience, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the outpouring of love, support, and generosity that helped secure my freedom.
“To my family, friends, colleagues, and all those who contributed to the ransom payment of 25 million naira, I extend my deepest gratitude. Your selflessness, kindness, and prayers sustained me during that dark period and brought me hope.
“Our amiable Governor and Visitor to ABSU – Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR – was also there for me and my family, and I am most grateful to him.
“Most importantly, I thank God Almighty for His divine intervention, protection, and deliverance. His presence was my comfort, and His mercy was my shield.
“Thank you all again for being my heroes, my rock, and my safe haven. I’m forever grateful.
“With heartfelt appreciation.”
Witnesses of his kidnapping said the erudite, soft-spoken Professor, who was in company of his wife, was kidnapped in a Commando style as some unidentified gunmen had swooped on him while he had stopped to fuel his vehicle at a filling station around Umuekwule, Amachara in Umuahia.
The witnesses added that Prof Emezue was whisked away by no fewer than three men that accosted him at the fuel station who dragged him into an already waiting Lexus SUV and collected his wife’s ATM card before zooming off towards the Imo-Abia border.
However, Governor Alex Otti, during one of his monthly media chats last year, disclosed that two of the kidnappers have been arrested. One of them, the Governor said, was arrested at an airport while trying to flee the country.
