New APC chairman, deputy, resign from senate
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to conduct by-elections for Nasarawa West and Borno North senatorial zones following the resignations of the two senators representing the districts at the senate; Abdullahi Adamu and Abubakar Kyari, respectively.
Adamu who was elected via consensus as the new National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), penultimate Saturday, during the party’s national Convention, announced his resignation from the senate, Tuesday, from the senate as senator representing Nasarawa West.
This is also as Abubakar Kyari, the current APC Deputy Chairman (North), also resigned his membership of the upper legislative chamber.
Until his resignation he represented Borno North at the senate.
Adamu, a former governor of the state resigned from the senate, to focus on his new assignment as the new head of the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) ahead of the 2023 General Election
Their resignations were stated in letters read on the floor of the Upper Chamber by Senate President Ahmad Lawan on Tuesday.
In their letters they both thanked their constituents for the opportunity to represent them at the senate.
Specifically, Adamu said Lawan has shown that all arms of government could come together to work as “one national government”.
The former Nasarawa west senator asked APC members in the national assembly to ensure that their party wins the general election in 2023.
“I am, with utmost respect and appreciation, informing you that consequent to my victory as National Chairman in the just concluded APC convention, I hereby formally resign as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Nasarawa West senatorial district with effect from April 1, 2022,” he said.
Lawan is expected to declare their seats vacant and notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after which it will conduct by-elections to fill the seats.
